Cal 43 “Ballad”

Lovely Bill Lapworth design in superb condition and far better than new! Fully rebuilt and refitted in 2010-2012 for a discerning new owner, with further improvements made from 2015 through the present. No corners were cut and no expense was spared.  It is reported that nearly $500,000 was spent. All this work is obvious from the moment one approaches the boat from the dock. If you are looking for a strong, capable, classic design with over-the-top improvements, this is an excellent choice. Please read the full description and specs to realize the extent of the work done.

Everything on deck has been carefully thought out and meticulously executed. All ports, windows and hatches are polished stainless. All running rigging is perfectly laid out and led aft with Harken blocks and traveler on custom fairings. Custom fiberglass Dorade boxes are color matched to the deck and are topped with beautiful, polished, oversized SS cowl vents and guard rails. The cockpit has a full Iverson dodger and enclosure with removable mesh and solid side panels with windows.

The cockpit is laid out for easy single or double handed sailing. All control lines lead aft under the dodger and through rope clutches. An electric winch to port handles all lines except for the genoa and spinnaker sheets with push-button ease. One can stand in front of the wheel, out of the weather, and reach everything.

The original, single spreader mast was replaced with a new tapered double spreader mast with swept back spreaders that is six (6) inches taller to allow for increased boom height above deck. Old chainplates were removed and holes filled. New chainplates were fabricated and installed farther aft to accommodate the swept spreaders.

Harken furling, Ullman Sails and stack pack, Tides Marine Strong Track, Dyform wire rigging, Harken hydraulic backstay, and high modulus lines are the backbone of the sailing system. An asymmetric spinnaker with top down furling and a removable sprit are easily deployed for off the wind work.

The original deck coring was removed and replaced with structural foam, and all existing hardware holes were filled prior to re-glassing and fairing. The original second cabin entry into the galley was removed and an opening hatch installed in its place. Fixed salon windows have custom SS polished frames inside and out. Two additional opening ports were cut in aft and all opening ports were replaced with new.

The hull topsides were sanded, filled and longboard faired prior to application of Flag Blue Awlgrip paint with White Awlgrip stripes. Her decks, cabin and cockpit were also filled and faired prior to Awlgrip topcoats and contrasting nonskid. And, the bottom was faired and barrier coated prior to bottom paint.

The interior was re-done tastefully, preserving the original cabinetry. With white Awlgrip applied over the original dark mahogany bulkheads and partitions, the refinished original mahogany doors and drawers make for a nice, traditional feel, but much brighter. The cabin is open and airy and highly functional. There are three separate cabin spaces with doors, and a unique head/shower arrangement. A Dickinson kerosene bulkhead heater provides heat any time and two engine supplied blowers supply heat when the engine is running.

“Ballad” is blessed to have had three owners in a row who have lavished her with attention and money. Major work has been done at regular intervals beginning in 1996 with a full rewire, new electrical panel, new electronics and other work. In 2007 a new Yanmar engine and Aqua Drive were installed, and more electronics upgraded. And then a complete refit again in 2012 with ongoing upgrades up to the present.
